Happy December

It’s with a great feeling and excitement that I welcome you to the very last month in the year 2018. Agreed, it’s not been easy. Many things have happened from January to this time – good, bad and ugly (and beautiful); whatever may be the case with you, one thing is certain – You are alive, hale and hearty.

Indeed, there will always be an end to every beginning; however, and sadly, not everyone who witnessed the beginning is guaranteed to see the end. But we are all privileged to see the last month of 2018. Although, everything may not be going as expected; almost everyone is being affected by the unpleasant economic situation/ uncertainties in the world, but I am very certain that, ‘It is only the living that celebrate Christmas and the Cross-over to a New Year’.

The collapsed building in Port Harcourt

This writer is currently in Port Harcourt, Rivers State of Nigeria as at the time of this writing on a routine visit to our Rivers State branch office. It is worthy to note that the recent building that collapsed at Woji Road, GRA Phase Two, Port Harcourt is just two buildings away from our office. Even as at the time of this writing (about a week after the incident), dead bodies trapped in the collapsed building are still being evacuated, while relations and other family members of those trapped remain at the site of the incidence morning, noon and night hoping to at least see the body of their loved ones (dead or alive). It is indeed a tragic occurrence; the victims witnessed the beginning of November, but couldn’t live to see December. May the Lord grant the souls of the departed eternal rest (Amen). This should make us to be grateful and appreciate life, for each day is a gift; we should strive to make the best of it.

Each day is a gift

This period presents us with the opportunity to look back and appraise our life vis-à-vis our family, work/ career, religion, and other things that matters to us, makes our life complete and worth living. This is why it’s very important to always get our priorities right. There’s a delusion that happens to almost all of us which often makes us to think that we’ve got all the time in the world to do all we want to do. Time is indeed the scarcest resource on earth; once lost it can never be regained. We should approach everything with a sense of urgency and drive, as if we are already behind schedule in the accomplishment of our goals. For instance, yesterday, November 30, 2018 is gone forever, and it can only be remembered in history; whatever we were supposed to do yesterday and we didn’t do is lost already, we can only do it today, or wait till November 30, 2019. There can never be another November 30, 2018, never! In a survey that was once carried out among people in their last few days on earth, it was discovered that almost all of them regretted on the things they didn’t do (which they could have done) than the things they actually did. Wisdom should teach us to learn from the mistakes of others, and not repeat the cycle of errors, failures and misdeeds.

Time is the Only Thing

December 2018 is presenting to us another clean slate to rewrite our destiny and make an indelible impact. Some people’s brain has been programmed to work with calendar year; they believe they can only begin a project or an endeavour at the beginning of the year (January), and preparing to end it in December. This is why almost everyone talks about New Year Resolution (which is often broken anyway), but no one talks about ‘Life Time Resolution’. Indeed, life is a continuous cycle, your birth marking the beginning, and death the ending. Will you just die and the world will not know you once lived? Some people can never die – their works and the impacts they have made will forever speak for them, even for generations yet unborn (Remember our article on legends titled, ‘Get Bold! Get Mad!! Get Crazy!!!, read here https://bit.ly/2EvuaFj).

All the Worlds a Stage

Sometimes, I think, ponder and wonder about life and its essence; we strive and work so hard to get to the pinnacle of our career, and to be reckoned with in our community, country and the world at large, and after all have been done, the world will bid us ‘goodbye’. Although, this is a sad reality about life; death is common to every living thing, no one can do anything about it. Remember the saying, ‘As certain as death’. Now, when something is beyond anyone’s control, what do we do? The wise thing to do is to ‘plan for it wisely’. It is my sincere belief that each of us was born to fulfill particular purpose(s) on earth. Bill Gates was born to ‘create’ software and computers, while Tim Berners-Lee ‘developed’ the World Wide Web which made a huge contribution to how we navigate and view the internet today. Our own Aliko Dangote ‘produces’ goods and other commodities to meet various human needs. Notice the powerful keywords: Create, Develop and Produce; indeed, the people that change our world are creators/ inventors, developers and producers, and those that render services related to these.
