“Ha…Ha… Is it that serious? Will 2017 be any different from 2016 or any other year for that matter”
“My brother, 2016 has not been good for many people in this country. Abeg, I no even wan remember that year again”
“I feel you’re talking like this because of the recession and its antecedent effects; and if that’s the case, economic analysts had predicted that the recession in Nigeria will continue into the year 2017, so don’t rejoice too soon”

“Must you make joke out of everything? Who is talking about Uncle MMM, if he likes, make he no come back; of what use has he even been to us since he left. But seriously, haven’t you heard about MMM, the popular investment scheme that gives 30% monthly return?”
“Oh! That one, no wonder I couldn’t remember, it’s already a forgotten issue. I heard the accounts have been closed. Hope you didn’t put your money there?”
“So what is wrong with MMM? Our accounts have only been frozen, not closed. I am very optimistic that they will be reactivated this January. You don’t know that MMM is just another form of investment like fixed deposit, bond, stock market, forex, real estate, et cetera, and the return on investment (ROI) of MMM is the best compared to other forms of investment”
Donatus, you never cease to amaze me. You’ve been my friend since our university days, and we both graduated from the Department of Banking and Finance, so how could you be so gullible and cheaply deceived to invest in such a ponzi scheme. I expected you to know better”
“Cornelius, why are you sounding as if MMM is fraudulent or illegal. Do you know that so many people from all works of life are involved in it. Honestly, I see it as the most lucrative business in the world for now. Once my account is reactivated this January, my money would have doubled”
“I like your optimism; May God help you Dona. I expected you to have learnt from history, since history repeats itself. This is not the first time such schemes have been introduced; in the past we’ve had wonder banks such as Pennywise, Treasure Line, Turning Point, Nospecto, etc. They all come with different names and packages, but their modus operandi is basically the same: Robbing Peter to pay Paul’. It is also on record that MMM has been operated and totally collapsed in Russia, China, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Kenya. So, what makes you think it hasn’t collapsed in Nigeria?”
“Abeg Cornelius, don’t infect me with your pessimism, this year is still brand new and don’t begin to spoil it for me. Please let’s change this topic.
“So what are your other hopes and aspirations for the New Year, outside MMM account reactivation?”
“If truth must be told, 2016 was a very weird year, everything that happened was abnormal, prices of almost everything skyrocketed, the country was also officially declared to be in recession. Going forward, I would want the prices of everything to come back to the status quo”
“But seriously, do you think that is possible, going by the statistics: low oil revenue, high exchange rate, high cost of operation, The vandalism by the Niger-Delta Avenger, all these are certain to go into 2017, etc.
“Abeg, dem send you to me? Why are you always negative-minded? Are you a prophet of doom? Don’t you have faith that things could change for the better?”
“Very well, now talking about prophesy, I heard some Prophets have started prophesying and predicting what will happen in 2017. I’m really very inquisitive to know what will happen, has your Pastor said anything yet”
“Abeg, commot for here, You no get Pastor?’ Go and ask him now”
“You know, in Nigeria, you don’t have to be a prophet to predict the country’s future. Okay, let’s reason together. Do you need a special prophet to tell you that the following will happen in 2017; ‘That the Niger Delta Avengers will cause further crisis. That there will be change of cabinet. That some banks will go on mass retrenchment of their staffs. That there will be emergence of a new political party in preparation for 2019 election. That Donald Trump will create tension in the world. That certain local aircraft will experience emergency landing due to engine fault. That three or more prominent Nigerians must pray seriously against the bereavement in their families. That some state governors are likely to face the threat of removal from office. That there will be fire outbreak in some major markets with many casualties. That some renowned traditional rulers are likely to join their ancestors before June of 2017. That the Naira will remain unstable against other major currencies’. Do you need any prophet to tell you all these?”
“You’re right my brother, these are just common sense. Certain events are bound to happen. But how do you think 2017 will fare for you?”
“I have a completely different mentality my brother. I have had this long time belief that my condition is not dependent on the condition of the country I reside; it is all dependent on what I make out of every situation. Let me ask you a question, how was your condition before Nigeria came into recession?”
“Abeg, don’t go there, Kuku talk say you wan embarrass me because you know very well that I was born in recession, I grew in recession, and I still live in recession. As you know, anyone that doesn’t have money is technically in recession”
“That’s exactly my point, you’ve been saying this since our University days. You had been in recession long before this country was officially declared to be in recession. What does that tell you? It means that you as a person can also be out of recession and live in abundance, even if the country is still in recession”
“This is an absolutely true talk. As a man thinks in his heart, so is he. Success and failure in life is a function of ones mindset”
“Exactly Cornelius! Someone I respect so much once said that if you fail, it’s your fault, and if you succeed, it’s your fault, meaning that no one is to be blamed for your failure, as no one can claim glory for your success”
