“HuuuuuRrayyyyy, Our President is back, HuuuuuuuuRrayyyyy, better health to Mr. President (Polycarp singing and repeating the song)”
“Polycarp, no be like that Evi-Edna Ogholi sing the song; it is “Uh yea, I wish you happy birthday, Uh yea, very very many happy returns”
“Abeg, my brother, everyone has the right to compose his own song, this one na my own version, I no need record label; abi anyone go sue me for copyright? Me just dey happy say our President that has been away for about 3 months is back, strong, hale and hearty”
“Please, don’t go there… I agree hale and hearty, but strong, I completely disagree. Are you aware that the President has proposed working from home?”
“And what is wrong with that provided he can deliver the dividends of democracy to us from the house”
“Ha… Ha… Ha… Person dey work from his office, you never smell divi…, na when he com dey work from house you go com get dividends, abeg, wake up from your slumber”
“Are you not happy that the President is back on his feet”
“Back on his feet? Was he crawling before? Abeg, if you no get better thing to say, make we talk another thing”
“But don’t you think that now that ‘Sai Baba’ is back, the economy will take a new turn for the better”
“Let me throw the question back to you: How well was the economy faring before he left?”
“Well… well… not too good, but there is a better hope now that he is back. At least, if not for anything, the welcome back speech Mr. President delivered came with messages of hope, peace, unity, progress, and most importantly, change”
“Na today you don dey hear such political slogans of hope, change or whatever. Abegi, make I hear word. There’s just one thing I thank God for concerning Mr. President”
“Ahhh!!! Thank God… I was beginning to think you were antagonistic to PMB. So, what’s that if I may ask?”
“Well…, that has to do with the recovery of his health. You know there were rumours that he won’t come back alive and many likened his case to that of former President Yar’Adua. You know, my health was totally down for 2 whole days last week; I was confined to the bed almost for the whole period of 48 hours. It was as if I was gonna die; but I’m fully back and better now. You know, that experience actually made me to have an inkling of what our President must have experienced. So, I have an idea of being away from work at the Aso Rock and the home (the other room) for about 103 days, it’s a miracle that he is back alive. We thank God for that”
“Glory be to God. This is a testimony, I never knew you were sick. It didn’t even show in your body, you’re still looking fresh and plumpy”
“My brother, there’s just a thin line between life and death, and no one is in control of when and how he’ll die. My illness was actually a near-death experience. The incident gave me a fresh idea about life – ‘good health is a privilege that must be guarded jealously’. Indeed, health is wealth”
“You know, good health is better than silver and gold”
“Polycarp, you know sometimes I wonder if I should be having any serious conversation with you. The quote you just said, is it correct?
“Oga Joe, you’re always reading in between the lines and you pay too much attention to little details. Okay, I know the saying is ‘A good name is better than silver and gold’, but with what you and our President passed through won’t it be appropriate to say ‘good health’?”
“Well, absolutely, but stop quoting out of context. You know, it is often said that ‘you may not appreciate what you have until you lose it’. You can lose money and make double that money back; you can lose a house and you can end up buying or building a bigger and better one; you can even lose any part of your body and get a replacement back (thanks to medical technology), but when you are dead, can you get your life back?”
“Hmmmmm…..well, you can’t in this present life, except in the world to come”
“That’s exactly my point Poly, so let’s make the most of this one life that we have, we must appreciate the gift of life and the value of good health”
“Absolutely, I agree with you. Now that the President is back and better, there’s a high hope that everything will come back to shape”
“That is if your President is a magician? Please get this straight, the health of the President has nothing to do with the health of the country, and whether he’s back or not has little or nothing to do with the state of the economy. As much as I’m concerned about the economy of this country, I am much more concerned about my own personal economy”
“Well, I understand you, but is your personal economy not dependent on the state of the national economy?”
“Not always, except you are a politician or contractor working for the government. You see, one thing I have come to realize is that your personal economy is a function of the value that comes out of you. People will pay you according to what they feel you are worth or the value of the service you render”
“Uhmmmm… that’s powerful!!! You know the recent happening in the world of sport has got me thinking, most especially the legendary fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor. I learnt that Mayweather’s flawless victory will add about $300million to his initial networth of about $700million. That would launch Mayweather over $1 billion for career earnings, a mark reached only by two other elite, iconic athletes: Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. Each has earned about $1.5 billion over the course of their careers”
“Bravo!!! I really enjoyed your analysis. Did you take note of certain words you used while talking: ‘earnings’ and ‘networth’. The iconic athletes you earlier mentioned created a special value (worth) for themselves in their career. You know, the same thing applies to the highest paid footballers in the world such as Carlos Tevez, Neymar Jnr, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and others; the wealth they have accrued to themselves is a function of the value they add to the various clubs they play for. And interestingly, their networth has nothing to do with the country they come from, their age, colour, religion or race”
“That’s true, you’re making very good and valid point oga Joe”
“And you know, this applies to everything in life. Employers are looking for employees that will add value to the organisation. Valuable workers can hardly be relieved of their job; they are always relevant in their workplace. The general health of the company depends on them, and they are usually rewarded accordingly. Even, relationship-wise, we want to make friends with people of value; almost everyone wants to get married to people that has value. And the interesting thing is that you can increase your value by improving on your skills and abilities”
“Umhhhh….. Umhhhh…… I feel I need to go and look for ways to improve myself, my value immediately”
“Yes, we all need to; for it is in improving ourselves that we will start improving on our value”
“Thank you sir, let me go and think about my life”
“Alright Polycarp, think well and see you next time”
