“Bro. Timothy, how you dey now. E don tey wey I see you”
“Thank you bro, I still dey alive, at least na the only thing wey I dey certain about now”
“Tim, Tim, you and this your funny talks, you never change. How’s work now?”
“Work? The last time I went to work was March this year, since then I never see work do. You know I’m a Teacher now, school never open”.
“Oh! That’s true. I heard just few days ago that schools will be resuming soon. At least, there is hope; Congratulations in advance!”
“Never congratulate me bro. No be so we hear say International flight go resume operation on August 29, 2020 before it was further postponed to September 5, 2020. Abeg, this our country is confused”
“The Director-General of NCAA, Musa Shuaibu Nuhu informed that they are working on non-aviation logistics, hence the need for the postponement”
“That’s exactly what I’m talking about, why didn’t they put every factor into consideration before declaring a date of opening in the first place. Those people are just confused”
“Well, you know, this COVID-19 has disrupted so many things globally, it’s not peculiar to Nigeria. But I know things will get better with time”
“I agree, the pandemic has caused a change in many things, including our lifestyle, but our leaders are also not helping matters at all. They have got their priorities wrong. Education is the lifeblood of any sane society, but over here it seems to be the least on their priority list. Many businesses have opened including the operation of local flights, so why did they deliberately keep the students and teachers at home? This is why we are where we are. Any society that does not pay serious attention to the education of her people will be laid back”
“Umh, you have a point bro. But how have you been coping all this while”
“It’s by the grace of God o, and through the support of friends, family and other well-wishers”
“But you know, it’s not just schools that are affected. Do you know there are many other businesses that can never survive a month of closure. Many restaurants/ eateries, shopping and retails, beauty and spas shops, bars and night clubs, fitness outlets, sports-related businesses and several others have gone under as a result of the pandemic”
“Hmmm… Only God will help us! At the beginning of the year, we were all very optimistic that this year 2020 will be a very good year. My Pastor even said it will be a year of our double blessing because the year is pronounced 20-20. Now, this is September, the whole year is almost gone, and we cannot lay our hands to any achievement this year, except for the marking of our birthdays”
“(Tim laughing) Bro Dan you have a very good sense of humour; it’s never a dull moment being with you. Why not consider comedy as your secondary business”
“Bro Tim, you’re making me laugh. Teaching is my calling and it is also my hobby. Although, people used to say I’m funny, but I’m just myself, and that’s just it “
“You know, things are changing globally including our ways of life and lifestyles. Many of us are already accustomed to a rigid lifestyle of ‘this is how we’ve been doing things, and hence we must continue to do them like that’. Indeed, many things have changed and many other things are still changing, and it is only those that can change with change that will stand out in this era. So, this calls for flexibility in our thinking and ways of life”
“So, are you suggesting that I give comedy a thought?”
“Not exactly, the point I’m making is for you to think and discover other things you can do, may be other things you have flair for outside teaching which can still fetch you some money, even if it will be a secondary source of income. We don’t truly know what we can do until we try”
“Hmmm… how come I’ve never thought about this? It makes so much sense. Come to think of it, if one has more than one source of income, it will be almost impossible to be broke”
“You can say that again. This is even more sacrosanct at this period of global economic downturn. Even in Nigeria, all the economic parameters are not favourable, talk of the exchange rate, the price of crude oil, the unemployment rate, inflation rate, the external debt, GDP, etc. It’s really bad that even our government don’t seem to know the way out; every man is to himself”
“Na die we dey so, will things ever get better for us?”
“Well, like I earlier said, when all the chips are down, every man will be left to himself. Rather than worry yourself about the national economy, why not think about how you can better your personal economy. Did you in any way contribute to the mess that our economy is in right now?”
“Me!!!? A common teacher, I don’t even know anyone in the corridor of power”
“(Dan Smiles) You now see the reason why you need to pay closer attention to your welfare. We all wish and pray that the economy improves, because it affects all of us in one way or the other; however, when things fall apart and the centre can no longer hold, everyone is left to himself”
“You’re right bro. But we must still be hoping for a better tomorrow for ourselves and our country”
“Rather than ‘hope for better tomorrow’, why not ‘create the better tomorrow?”
“What do you mean? I don’t get it?”
“That’s exactly the difference between successful people and the unsuccessful ones. Successful people plan their lives ahead 5, 10, 15, 20 and even 50 years down the line, while the unsuccessful ones live per time. If you can plan your life, nothing will really catch you unawares again”
“True. But I feel that’s easier said than done because it’s easy to plan ones life, but it requires discipline to follow through the plan up to execution. But I agree with you, there are many benefits to living a planned life”
“(Dan’s phone rings) Yes, you’re also right there. That’s my agents calling me, I’m looking to buy an apartment for investment purpose, I see the need to diversify my investment portfolio”
“Lucky you! I don’t have any investment not to talk of diversification”
“It’s really not a big deal, it starts with the decision to invest… there’s something for everyone as far as real estate is concerned”
“Thank you sir, I’ll surely give it a good thought when I have money”
“Alright, no problem. There’s really no wrong time to invest in real estate; it’s better late than never. Thank you Tim, I need to go now, I don’t want to keep my agent waiting”
“Okay, thank you. I appreciate the time with you.
“Thank you”
